The William II Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle is located in Carlisle near the famous Hadrian's Wall. It is estimated the castle is more than 900 years old and has witnessed many wars due to its proximity to the border of England and Scotland. In the present day, the castle is owned and ran by the English Heritage. It is open to the public and tourist can enjoy visiting it. 
The castle was originally built in the reign of William II. William II was the son of the great William the Conqueror  who conquered England in 1066. During this time the area was considered by the Scots a part of their territory and called it Cumberland and this attributes to the numerous wars witnessed in the region. After the Scots were driven out by William II, he ordered a castle be built on the site where an old Roman fort used to stand. 
Construction of the castle began in 1093 and by early 1100s the castle was completed. The castle was used as a supply base for royal forces stationed in the area to fight Scots who would occasionally invade the area.
